Happiness- To be or not to be?
Most humans look forward to their futures, because the word future seems to mean “happiness.” Not all of that is true, the future is unknown it can bring many different aspects into your life that you never wanted to happen. To be happy is not to have the material things, or to pursue unobtainable dreams but the overwhelming urge to smile when you are just enjoying your life. Music is an alternative to happiness, it expresses how we feel, not makes us feel what the song is expressing, when you listen to a happy song- it’s because you are already happy. I do believe that people who have more friends are happier; those who are alone tend to alienate themselves away from anything social. If you have happier friends, they’re attitudes and outlook for life may influence you to be the same way.
Media plays a HUGE part of a person’s happiness. If that person’s favorite actor is in a new movie, they are most likely going to see that movie. Disney movies are famous for their fantasy, happy-endings; those of us who have experienced the more unpleasant part of life believe that the fairy-tale endings are not true. As a young child watching our favorite movies, we each picked out a different person, a person we wanted to be. It wasn’t because we were unhappy, we just thought that the person we wanted to be was happier than we were, maybe they had an amazing job or good looks or a cute boyfriend, the point is- we wanted to be them because they had something we wanted too.
Happiness comes from dreams and dreaming. Dreaming for something better makes you work harder for the thing you want most, and once you attain it, a surge of accomplishment flows through you. The happiest I have ever been was when I hit a three-run double to win the sectional- championship game as a sophomore, my heart pounded as I rounded first and slid into second. The feeling of accomplishment and pride was overwhelming as my teammates congratulated me, and as my father just smiled. It was exhilarating and because I dreamed to be the winning hit, I felt amazing when I achieved it. Happiness comes from dreaming.

My Shield- British Literature.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt. I chose to use Eleanor’s quote because I believe it’s the truth. If one does not believe in their dreams, what kind of future would be waiting for them? This quote is my motto because I am a dreamer and believe in the future. Those of us who dream, dream of a better world to live in or a better future for those who are less fortunate. We dream to escape the dark realm of reality and fight through the darkness for a light to lead the way.
I chose to use the color purple because it represents creativity, wisdom, and mystery. Like many people, I adore the arts such as music and theatre, and need a creative outlet. I write poetry, lyrics, and stories when I’m not listening to music or reading novels. I also chose the color black to reflect elegance and power. The negatives of the colors I have chosen show that I can become angry quickly and sometimes be cruel.
The candle symbolizes light in the darkness of life. A candle’s components also have different meanings: wax- humanity, wick- soul, light- love, flame- godhead, fire- obedience, heat- humility. I think that the component that describes me most is the wick. The wick of the candle represents the human soul, and is symbolic because it can hold a flame without burning out. The strength of the flame does not destroy the wick, and I think this applies to me. Many people have told me I am a strong person, and feel like I can handle anything thrown at me. If I’m getting “burned” like a candle, my light nor wick will be spent.
Night is typically associated with the mystery of darkness. It is the symbol of the unconscious and represented by the goddess Nyx, who is the mother of sleep, dreams, and death. I did not choose Night, it chose me. The mystery of the dark is my biggest fear because I know what can come out of it. Between the shadows, the dark is an smokescreen covering up what evil lies behind it. I chose to put night on my shield because it symbolizes that I realize what my fears are and that I can confront them.
From a tiny, hungry caterpillar comes a winged creature of delicate beauty. The butterfly is a metaphor for transformation and hope, triumph of the spirit and the soul of unconscious attraction towards light. I feel like a butterfly reflects my hope for the future. To me, a butterfly also represents a more delicate and frail side of me that no one really sees; the side that is secretly a dreamer and perspires to fly.
Greek myths tell us that Heracles wrestled with a supernatural lion, which no earthly weapon could harm. After killing the lion, Heracles wore its skin as a sort of armor. The lion or lioness can be interpreted to represent power and protector. My name, Elexus, means “Defender” and I feel that a lion could be used to reflect that. A lion is protective over its family, friends, and home, I am also. This is the side of me that everyone sees.
